Down the Rabbit Hole

My experience of Dubai was a bit like being sucked through a fantastic vortex – the city is a place where things are never quite what they seem. Unlike India that bares herself to you unabashedly – the good and the bad in your face and nose, unavoidably – Dubai is literally, and figuratively all about facades and what you see is very rarely what you get.

Although the city appears to be hurtling forward (and upwards) at breakneck speed, the reality of the economic downturn seems to be quickly catching up to the emirates’ lightspeed growth. Although projects are officially ‘on track’ in the local press, many construction projects are on hold, delayed, or cancelled.

The Dubai Metro, however, is up and running at full speed – at least the first line of stations. The Red Line, currently with 21 operational stations, runs mostly above ground on an elevated track, affording excellent views of the passing city. The network is completely air conditioned, offering a comfortable way to get around the city even in the sweltering summer heat on the Arabian peninsula.

Coupled with a network of feeder buses, the metro system aims to provide a public transit alternative to private cars and taxis to ease the horrendous traffic troubles that have begun to plague the city. In typical Dubai fashion, trains are equipped with a special VIP section in the frontmost car.

Blue Grass Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant Control and Support Building

Heating, ventilating and air conditioning units are installed atop the Control and Support Building roof and inside the facility construction craft workers continue installing electrical cable tray and support infrastructure. Once complete, the Control and Support Building will house the control room and integrated control system used to operate the Blue Grass Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant.
